We are creatures of habit. What we do regularly is what makes us who we are. Developing the right habits is probably the leading key for us to make the most of each day and to achieve our vision of the person we want to be.
Developing new habits requires considerable effort and a lot of persistence and empathy. But it is so worth it.
Some of my habits are so important to me that I call them rituals. Here are my favorite ones:
Rituals for the mind & soul: Every day, I read for at least an hour, I write at least one thing, and I learn at least something new. Since the lockdown, I am also learning to train my mind to new horizons via a daily practice of guided meditation.
Rituals for the heart: This is a new one. Every day, my partner and I dance to one song that means something to us. We do it as a way to keep the intention in our relationship and remind ourselves, daily, of our commitment to each other, through the good and hard times.
Rituals for the body: every day, I practice yoga for a minimum of 70 minutes, use my trainer bike for 30 to 45 minutes and take a long walk (if we are not on a lockdown, that is). I also dance for anywhere from 90 minutes on Sundays, enjoying the brightness of the afternoon lights and the freedom of my body.
Rituals to honor myself: every day I start my day with a cup of green tea or hot lemon water and honey while letting my mind wander and appreciate the moment and to simply be. I then spend a few hours feeding my mind and strengthening my body before cooking myself a healthy breakfast that I eat in silence. Daily, I also take the time to wash my face with warm clothes, both in the morning and night. This simple gesture takes no time, cleans my skin in a natural way, and leaves me with a warm feeling and the appreciation of the person and life that is ME.
